2020 ATP Tour Finals Semifinals Recap

Dominic Thiem would win his 300th career match, Daniil Medvedev would defeat Rafael Nadal, and much more at the 2020 ATP Tour Finals.

2020 ATP Tour Finals Semifinals Results

Singles Results

Dominic Thiem (3) vs. Novak Djokovic (1)

In the first singles match of the day, the top-seeded Novak Djokovic would take on the third-seeded Dominic Thiem for a place in the finals.

In the first set of their match, Thiem would only need one break of Djokovic’s serve, in the eleventh game, to take the set 7-5.

But, in the second set, each player would serve well, holding their service games all the way to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Djokovic would prevail, 12-10, to take the set 7-6 (12-10).

In the decisive third set, each player would once again serve well, holding their service games to another tiebreak. In this tiebreak, Thiem would show off his big strokes and come out on top, 7-5, to take the set 7-6 (7-5) and win the match 7-5, 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (7-5).

Daniil Medvedev (4) vs. Rafael Nadal (2)

In the second semifinals, to decide who would play Dominic Thiem in the finals, the fourth-seed Daniil Medvedev would take on the second-seeded Rafael Nadal.

In the first set of play, after a grueling six games, the two would find themselves tied at three. But, Nadal would manage to win the next three games in a row, breaking Medvedev’s serve at love in the eighth game, to take the set 6-3.

But, in the second set, both players would break the other’s serve twice on their way to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Medvedev would prevail, 7-4, to take the set 7-6 (7-4) and force a third set.

In the decisive third set, down 2-3, Medvedev would win four straight games to take the set 6-3 and win the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Doubles Results

W.Koolhof / N.Mektic  (5) vs. M.Granollers / H.Zeballos  (4)

In the first doubles match of the day, the fifth-seeded team of Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic would take on the fourth-seeded team of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

In the opening set of their match, Koolhof and Mektic would only need one break of their opponents’ serve, in the eighth game, to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, they would once again only need one break, this time in the third game, to take the set 6-4 and win the match 6-3, 6-4.

J.Melzer / E.Roger-Vasselin  (7) vs. R.Ram / J.Salisbury  (2)

In the second doubles match of the day, the seventh-seeded team of Jurgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin would take on the second-seeded team of Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury.

In the opening set of their match, each team would manage to break the other’s serve once en route to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Ram and Salisbury would prevail, 7-4, to take the set 7-6 (7-4).

But, in the second set, Melzer and Roger-Vasselin would respond by getting two breaks of their opponents’ serve, in the fourth and sixth games, to take the set 6-3 and force a third set tiebreak.

In the third set tiebreak, Melzer and Roger-Vasselin would come out on top, 11-9, to win the match 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 11-9.
