2020 St. Petersburg Open Day 1 Recap

Cameron Norrie would upset the eighth-seeded Taylor Fritz, Stan Wawrinka would escape a challenge from Dan Evans, and much more at the 2020 St. Petersburg Open.

2020 St. Petersburg Open Day 1 Results

Singles Results

Tennys Sandgren vs. Aslan Karatsev (wc)

In the first match of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open, Russian wildcard Aslan Karatsev would get a huge victory over American Tennys Sandgren.

In the first set of their match, Karatsev would break Sandgren in the first game and would gain an early 4-2 lead. But, Sandgren would respond by winning three straight games, one on Karatsev’s serve, to take a 5-4 lead.

Still, Karatsev was not gonna go down easily, winning three consecutive games of his own to take the set 7-5. In the second set, each player would serve well, but a break of Karatsev’s serve in the fourth game by Sandgren would help him take the set 6-3 and force a third set.

In the decisive third set, each player would break the other’s serve once en route to 5-5. But, in the next two games, Karatsev would hold his serve and break Sandgren’s to take the set 7-5 and win the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Taylor Fritz (8) vs. Cameron Norrie

In the opening set of Cameron “Cam” Norrie’s match against the eighth-seeded Taylor Fritz, Norrie would only need one break of Fritz’s serve, in the tenth game, to take the set 6-4.

In the second set, Fritz would break Norrie in the first game and would ride that break to a 6-4 set victory of his own to force a third set.

In the decisive third set, Norrie would once again only need one break, in the fourth game, to take the set 6-3 and win the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Alexander Bublik vs. Mackenzie McDonald (pr)

In the opening set of American Mackenzie McDonald’s match against Alexander Bublik, the young American would get two breaks of Bublik’s serve, in the first and seventh games, to take the set 6-2.

But, in the second set, Bublik would respond by not dropping a single service game to force a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Bublik would dominate, winning 7-2, to take the set 7-6 (7-2).

In the decisive third set, down 3-4 to McDonald, Bublik would win three straight games, one at love and one on McDonald’s serve, to take the set 6-4 and win the match 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Evgeny Donskoy (wc) vs. Egor Gerasimov

Evgeny Donskoy would become the second wildcard of the day to advance to the second-round of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open by defeating opponent Egor Gerasimov.

In the opening set of their match, Donskoy would come out firing, winning the first three games, two on Gerasimov’s serve, to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

From there, he would ride his solid start to a 6-4 set victory. In the second set, each player would manage to break the other’s serve once en route to a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Donskoy would prevail, 7-4, to take the set 7-6 (7-4) and win the match 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Stan Wawrinka (5) vs. Daniel Evans

In the last singles match of the day, the fifth-seeded Stanislas “Stan” Wawrinka would take on Daniel “Dan” Evans.

In the opening set of their match, Evans would get the best of Wawrinka, breaking his serve twice, in the third and ninth games, to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, each player would serve well, holding their service games all the way to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Wawrinka would prevail, 7-3, to take the set 7-6 (7-3) and force a third set.

In the decisive third set, despite getting his serve broken in the first game, Wawrinka would win four games in a row to take a 4-1 lead.

From there, Evans would comeback to tie the set at five, but Wawrinka would win the eleventh and twelfth games back-to-back to take the set 7-5 and win the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Doubles Results

A.Bublik / R.Opelka vs. N.Cacic / M.Kecmanovic

In the first doubles match of the day, the team of Alexander Bublik and Reilly Opelka would take on the team of Nikola Cacic and Miomir Kecmanovic.

In the opening set of their match, Cacic and Kecmanovic would dominate, breaking their opponents’ serve twice while not dropping a single service game to take the set 6-2.

In the second set, each team would manage to break the other’s serve once on their way to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Bublik and Opelka would prevail, 7-5, to take the set 7-6 (7-5) and force a third set tiebreak.

In the third set tiebreak, Bublik and Opelka would come out on top, 10-8, to win the match 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8.

J.Murray / N.Skupski  (1) vs. K.Khachanov / A.Rublev

In the last match of the day, the top-seeded doubles team of Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski would take on the Russian pairing of Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev.

In the opening set of their match, each team would hold their serve all the way to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Murray and Skupski would come out on top, 8-6, to take the set 7-6 (8-6).

In the second set, Khachanov and Rublev would respond by getting a break of their opponents’ serve to take the set 6-3 and force a third set tiebreak.

In the third set tiebreak, Khachanov and Rublev would edge out Murray and Skupski, to win 13-11, and upset the No. 1 team 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 13-11.
