WTA Italian Open Day 1 Recap

Two seeded players would lose in the first round, several qualifiers would advance to the next round, and much more at the Italian Open.

WTA Italian Open Day 1 Results

Singles Results

Elena Rybakina (10) vs. Ekaterina Alexandrova

The tenth-seeded Elena Rybakina would absolutely dominate Ekaterina Alexandrova in their match today. In the opening set, Rybakina would win six straight games, three on Alexandrova’s serve, to take the set 6-0.

In the second set, Rybakina would win the first three games consecutively and would go on to take the set 6-4 and win the match 6-0, 6-4.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. Shuai Zhang

Although she would be pushed to three sets by Shuai Zhang, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova would get a solid victory today. In the first set of their match, down 0-1, Pavlyuchenkova would win four games in a row to take a commanding 4-1 lead.

From there, she would get broken once, but hold on to her lead to take the set 6-4. In the second set, the two would go back-and-forth, with Zhang winning the first three games, followed by Pavlyuchenkova winning five out of the next six games.

Eventually, the second set would go to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Zhang would come out on top, 7-5, to take the set 7-6 (7-5). In the third set, Pavlyuchenkova would win the first five games in a row before taking the set 6-1 and the match 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.

Amanda Anisimova vs. Donna Vekic (16)

American Amanda Anisimova would get a huge confidence booster today with a tight win over the sixteenth-seeded Donna Vekic.

In the opening set, each player would break the other’s serve twice en route to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Anisimova would win, 7-4, to take the set 7-6 (7-4).

In the second set, the two would break each other’s serve three times to go to another tiebreak. In this tiebreak, Anisimova would prevail, 8-6, to take the set 7-6 (8-6) and the match 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).

Barbora Strycova vs. Veronika Kudermetova

Barbora Strycova would get a solid straight-sets victory over Veronika Kudermetova today. In the first set, Strycova would only need one break of Kudermetova’s serve, in the fourth game, to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, Strycova would get three breaks to take the set 6-3 and the match 6-3, 6-3.

Marie Bouzkova vs. Ajla Tomljanovic

Marie Bouzkova would prove that she was ready to play today by getting a victory over the always dangerous Ajla Tomljanovic.

To start the match, Bouzkova would win the first three games in a row, but Tomljanovic would respond by winning three consecutive games herself. Nonetheless, Bouzkova would win the next three games to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, down 1-3, Bouzkova would win five out of the next six games to take the set 6-4 and the match 6-3, 6-4.

Anastasija Sevastova vs. Jasmine Paolini (wc)

Wildcard Jasmine Paolini would get a nice victory over Anastasija Sevastova, who defeated Coco Gauff at the US Open. In the opening set of their match, Paolini would break Sevastova’s serve four times to take the set 6-2.

In the second set, Paolini would get four more breaks to take the set 6-3 and the match 6-2, 6-3.

Magda Linette vs. Jelena Ostapenko

In the first set of Magda Linette’s match against Jelena Ostapenko, down 1-3, she would win five out of the next six games to take the set 6-4.

In the second set, she would get three breaks, while only being broken once, to take the set 6-3 and the match 6-4, 6-3.

Anna Blinkova (q) vs. Jil Teichmann

Qualifier Anna Blinkova would get a nice straight-sets victory over Jil Teichmann today. In the opening set, down 0-2, Blinkova would win five games in a row and would go on to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, Blinkova would get three breaks of Teichmann’s serve to take the set 6-3 and the match 6-3, 6-3.

Su-Wei Hsieh vs. Elise Mertens (11)

After her run all the way to the quarterfinals at the US Open, the eleventh-seeded Elise Mertens would defeat Su-Wei Hsieh with ease today.

In the opening set of their match, dpwn 2-3, Mertens would win four consecutive games, two on Hsieh’s serve, to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, down 0-1, Mertens would win six games in a row, three on Hsieh’s serve, to take the set 6-1 and the match 6-3, 6-1.

Alison Riske (13) vs. Aliona Bolsova (q)

Qualifier Aliona Bolsova would get one of the bigger wins of her career today against thirteenth-seeded American Alison Riske.

In the opening set, Riske would get three breaks of Bolsova’s serve to take the set 7-5. In the second set, Bolsova would respond by getting two breaks of Riske’s serve to force at tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Bolsova would previal, 7-4, to win the set 7-6 (7-4). In the third set, Bolsova would once again get two breaks and would take the set 6-3 and the match 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Julia Goerges vs. Danka Kovinic (q)

Qualifier Danka Kovinic would dismantle Julia Goerges in their first-round match today. In the opening set, Kovinic would only drop one game to Goerges, en route to a 6-1 set victory.

In the second set, Kovinic wouldn’t allow Goerges a single game, taking the set 6-0 and the match 6-1, 6-0.

Camila Giorgi (wc) vs. Dayana Yastremska

In the opening set of Dayana Yastremska’s match against wildcard Camila Giorgi, Yastremska would get two breaks of Giorgi’s serve to take the set 7-5.

In the second set, each player would break the other’s serve three times en route to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Giorgi would prevail, 7-5, to win the set 7-6 (7-5).

In the winner-takes-all third set, Yastremska would prevail, 6-4, to win the match 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.

Doubles Results

N.Hibino / M.Ninomiya vs. E.Cocciaretto / M.Trevisan  (wc)

In the only doubles match of the day, the team of Nao Hibino and Makoto Ninomiya would get a solid victory over the team of Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Martina Trevisan.

In the first set, Cocciaretto and Trevisan would dominate, getting three breaks of their opponents’ serve en route to a 6-1 set victory. But, in the second set, Hibino and Ninomiya would respond by getting three breaks of their own to take the set 7-5.

In the decisive third set tiebreak, Hibino and Ninomiya would prevail, 10-5, to win the match 1-6, 7-5, 10-5.
