Top Seed Open Day 1 Recap

Jennifer Brady would get an authoritative win, the third-seeded Johanna Konta would fall to Marie Bouzkova, and much more on Day 1 of the Top Seed Open.

Singles Results

Marie Bouzkova vs. Johanna Konta (3)

Despite an extended rain delay, Marie Bouzkova and Johanna Konta would eventually play one another in the first main draw match of the Top Seed Open.

In the first set, only needing one break of Konta’s serve, Bouzkova would edge her opponent 6-4 to take a one set lead. After battling to 4-all in the second set, Bouzkova would break Konta in the ninth game before taking the set 6-4.

With this, Marie Bouzkova would win the match 6-4, 6-4 and advance to the next round of play.

Magda Linette (6) vs. Lauren Davis

In her first round match, the WTA 36th ranked Magda Linette would take on the WTA 62nd ranked Lauren Davis. In the opening set, Linette would fall down 0-2 early, but would win six games in a row to take the set 6-2.

In the second set, Linette would be the one to gain the early lead, going up 3-0, and finishing off the set 6-3 to win the match 6-2, 6-3.

Jennifer Brady vs. Heather Watson

In her match against the WTA 51st ranked Heather Watson, Jennifer Brady would waste no time proving she was here to win.

In the opening set, Brady would break Watson in the first game and once more, in the seventh game, on her way to a 6-2 set victory. In the second set, Brady only allowed Watson one game, taking the set 6-1.

With this, Jennifer Brady would win the match 6-2, 6-1 and move on to the next round.

Madison Brengle vs. Aryna Sabalenka (2)

The second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka would have no issues taking the first set from the 30-year-old American Madison Brengle in their match.

Sabalenka would only allow Brengle to win one game, on Brengle’s serve, on her way to a 6-1 set victory. In the second set, after each player broke the other three times, the two would go to a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Brengle would come out on top 7-5 to take the set 7-6 (7-5) and level the match at a set apiece. The third set would be all Sabalenka, who would win five games in a row to take a commanding 5-0 lead before eventually taking the set 6-2 to win the match 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.

Jessica Pegula vs. Vera Zvonareva (wc)

After each player opened the match with a hold of serve, Jessica Pegula would win five games in a row, one at love, to take the opening set 6-1.

In the second set, Zvonareva would fight back, and despite getting behind 2-4, would take the set 7-5 to force a third set. In the decisive set, Pegula would break Zvonareva twice, and that would prove to be enough to win the set 6-4 and the match 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

Ons Jabeur (8) vs. Caty McNally (wc)

The WTA 39th ranked Ons Jabeur would handle American Caty McNally easily in the first set of their opening round match.

Jabeur would break McNally twice, holding her serve at love twice, en route to a 6-2 set victory. In the second set, Jabeur would break McNally three times, while being broken twice, to take the set 6-4 and the match 6-2, 6-4.

Doubles Results

Q.Gleason / C.Harrison vs. H.Carter / L.Stefani  (4)

In the only doubles match of the day, Hayley Carter and Luisa Stefani would team up to dominate Quinn Gleason and Catherine Harrison in the opening set of their match.

In the first set, Carter and Stefani would win six games in a row to take the set 6-0. In the second set, Carter and Stefani would once again look solid, taking the set 6-2 to win the match 6-0, 6-2.
