31st Palermo Ladies Open Day 2 Recap
Two qualifiers, Kaja Juvan and Ludmilla Samsonova, would pull off big upsets, Camila Giorgi would get a solid win, and much more.

31st Palermo Ladies Open Day 2 Results
Aliaksandra Sasnovich (q) vs. Elise Mertens (5)
The qualifier, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, would waste no time making any impression on the fifth-seeded Elise Mertens in their match today.
Sasnovich would break Mertens twice in the first set on her way to a 6-4 set victory. In the second set, Sasnovich would prove the first set to not be a fluke by defeating Mertens 6-1 to take the match 6-4, 6-1.
Tamara Zidansek vs. Oceane Dodin (q)
In her match against Oceane Dodin, the WTA 71st ranked Tamara Zidansek would get off to a fast start, taking the opening set 6-2.
In the second set, Dodin would fight back and break Zidansek four times, while only being broken three times, to take the set 6-4 and level the match at one set apiece.
The third set Oceane Dodin would finish off the upset by defeating Tamara Zidansek 6-4, to take the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Kaja Juvan (q) vs. Marketa Vondrousova (2)
The WTA 18th ranked player, and second-seeded in the tournament, Marketa Vondrousova would cruise through the first set of her match against qualifier Kaja Juvan.
Vondrousova would break Juvan three times on her way to a 6-1 set victory. In the second set, Juvan would even the match by defeating Vondrousova 7-5.
In the deciding third set, yet another upset would take place, with Kaja Juvan ousting Marketa Vondrousova 6-4 to win the match 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Kirsten Flipkens vs. Ludmilla Samsonova (q)
In what was becoming a common trend, the underdog, Ludmilla Samsonova would get the best of Kirsten Flipkens in their opening set. Samsonova would take the set 6-4 after breaking Flipkens twice.
Much like the first set, in the second set, Samsonova would dismiss Flipkens with relative ease and would win 6-2 to take the match 6-4, 6-2.
Nadia Podoroska (q) vs. Fiona Ferro
After winning the first three games to start the match, Fiona Ferro would take off with the first set against Nadia Podoroska. Ferro would take the set 6-2, breaking Podoroska three times.
In the second set, Ferro would only allow Podoroska to win one game and would take the match 6-2, 6-1.
Petra Martic (1) vs. Alison Van Uytvanck
The top-seeded Petra Martic would waste no time dismantling Alison Van Uytvanck in their first round match today. Martic wouldn’t allow Van Uytvanck to take a single game in the first set, demolishing her 6-0.
In the second set, Van Uytvanck would manage to win three games, but, in the end, Martic would win the match 6-0, 6-3.
Camila Giorgi vs. Rebecca Peterson
The career-high WTA 26th ranked player, Camila Giorgi, would have a successful first round match against Rebecca Peterson today.
Giorgi would break Peterson four times throughout the match and would come out on top with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Anett Kontaveit (4) vs. Patricia Maria Tig
The World No. 22 Anett Kontaveit would take on the World No. 85, Patricia Maria Tig in her first round match.
Kontaveit would get off to a good start, breaking Tig three times in the first set, and taking it 6-3. In the second set, after falling behind 0-3, Kontaveit would fight back and win six games in a row to take the match 6-3, 6-3.
C.Dinu / A.Mitu vs. G.Gatto-Monticone / J.Paolini
In doubles play, Italians Giulia Gatto-Monticone and Jasmine Paolini would team up to defeat the team of Cristina Dinu and Andreea Mitu.
Paolini and Gatto-Monticone would break Dinu and Mitu five times throughout the match and would win 6-2, 6-4.
F.Bilardo / D.Spiteri (wc) vs. L.Siegemund / Y.Wickmayer (3)
It wouldn’t take Laura Siegemund and Yanina Wickmayer long to defeat wildcards Federica Bilardo and Dalila Spiteri.
Siegemund and Wickmayer would only allow Bilardo and Spiteri to win two games all match, winning it 6-1, 6-1.
V.Gracheva / A.Komardina vs. E.Cocciaretto / M.Trevisan
The third pair of Italians teaming up for doubles today, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Martina Trevisan, would defeat Varvara Gracheva and Anastasiya Komardina today.
Cocciaretto and Trevisan would take the first set easily, 6-1. In the second set they would have to work much harder, but take the set 7-5 to win the match 6-1, 7-5.
B.Schoofs / R.Hoek (4) vs. I.Begu / G.Ruse
In the last doubles match of the day, Bibiane Schoofs and Rosalie van der Hoek would take a tight first set against Irina-Camelia Begu and Gabriela Ruse. Schoofs and Hoek would take the opening set 6-4, breaking Begu and Ruse once.
In the second set, Begu and Ruse would turn things around, taking the set 6-2 to level the match at one set apiece. In the decisive third set tiebreak, Schoofs and Hoek would win 10-5 to take the match 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.
