World TeamTennis Semifinals Recap

Jack Sock would come up big for the New York Empire, the Chicago Smash would put on an impressive performance, and much more during the World TeamTennis Semifinals.

World TeamTennis Semifinals Results

New York Empire d. Philadelphia Freedoms (22-18)

Coco Vandeweghe vs. Sofia Kenin

In the women’s singles, Sofia Kenin would break Coco Vandeweghe in the third game and consolidate the break with a hold to take a commanding 3-1 lead. 

Still, Vandeweghe would fight back and break Kenin in the eighth game to take the match to a tiebreak at 4-all. In the tiebreak, Kenin would win 5-2 to take the match 5-4 (5-2).

Jack Sock vs. Taylor Fritz

In the men’s singles, Jack Sock would come up big for his team against fellow American Taylor Fritz.

Sock would defeat Fritz in a tiebreak, 5-3, to win the match 5-4 (5-3).

Jack Sock / Neal Skupski vs. Fabrice Martin / Taylor Fritz

In the first playoffs match of the 2020 World TeamTennis Exhibition, partners Jack Sock and Neal Skupski would take on the team of Fabrice Martin and Taylor Fritz. 

To start the match, Martin and Fritz would jump out to a 3-2 lead. But, Sock and Skupski would battle back and win three games in a row to take the match 5-3.

Coco Vandeweghe / Jack Sock vs. Fabrice Martin / Taylor Townsend

In the mixed doubles, Coco Vandeweghe and Jack Sock would team up for a huge win against Fabrice Martin and Taylor Townsend. 

Vandeweghe and Sock would break Martin and Townsend twice to win the match 5-1.

Coco Vandeweghe / Nicole Melichar vs. Courtney Dolehide / Taylor Townsend

In the women’s doubles, Courtney Dolehide and Taylor Townsend would get a big win against Coco Vandeweghe and Nicole Melichar. 

Dolehide and Towsend would break Vandeweghe and Melichar once, in the third game, en route to winning the match 5-3.

Chicago Smash d. Orlando Storm (24-13)

Sloane Stephens vs. Jessica Pegula

In the women’s singles, after a tough battle, Jessica Pegula would come out with a huge victory against Sloane Stephens.

Pegula and Stephens would each break each other once on their way to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Pegula would defeat Stephens 5-1 to win the match 5-4 (5-1).

Brandon Nakashima vs. Tennys Sandgren

In the men’s singles, Brandon Nakashima would come up big against his opponent, Tennys Sandgren.

Nakashima would trounce Sandgren and win 5-1.

Rajeev Ram / Brandon Nakashima vs. Ken Skupski / Tennys Sandgren

To start the second semifinals match of the day, Rajeev Ram and Brandon Nakashima would completely dominate Ken Skupski and Tennys Sandgren.

Ram and Nakashima would break Skupski and Sandgren in the third and fifth games on their way to winning the match 5-1.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands / Rajeev Ram vs. Jessica Pegula / Tennys Sandgren

In the mixed doubles, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Rajeev Ram would join forces to pick up a big win against Jessica Pegula and Tennys Sandgren.

Mattek-Sands and Ram would break Pegula and Sandgren once, in the first game, en route to a 5-3 victory.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands / Eugenie Bouchard vs. Jessica Pegula / Darija Jurak

In the women’s doubles, the always dynamic duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Eugenie Bouchard would play a solid match against the team of Jessica Pegula and Darija Jurak.

Mattek-Sands and Bouchard would break Pegula and Jurak three times on their way to a 5-3 win.
