Like clockwork, on Saturday, February 29, Novak Djokovic continued his undefeated 2020 campaign with a championship win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
With championships in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and now 2020, Djokovic now has 5 Dubai Tennis Championship trophies. But, just a day ago, it seemed as if Djokovic would be watching the finals today. After dropping the first set of his semifinal match against Gael Monfils 2-6, Djokovic faced 3 match points in the 2nd set before he came back to win the match in 3 sets.
The championship however was a different story, with Djokovic defeating Tsitsipas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. It only took Djokovic one break in the first set, but after securing a break in the second Tsitsipas immediately broke back. Nonetheless, Djokovic held strong mentally, as usual, to break Tsitsipas’s service once again.
As for Tsitsipas, this was his 2nd year in a row in the championship match, losing to Roger Federer in 2019. Even though he lost, he has looked very good this year, winning in Marseille just a week ago.
After the match, Djokovic said, “It was a great week. Today against Stef it’s never easy, he’s one of the best players in the world and has been on a great run.”
“Yesterday I was one shot away from losing the match, three match points down. I could easily have not been here fighting for the trophy today. This is sports, things can turn around very quickly.”
