With the match approaching nearly two-and-a-half hours, Simona Halep shut down the 20-year-old Elena Rybakina in a tiebreak to claim her 20th career singles title.
The four-time finalist in 2020, Elena Rybakina, got off to a fast start defeating Halep in the first set 6-3. However, the reigning Wimbledon Champion, Halep, turned the match around in the second set winning 6-3. Even though the third set did eventually go to Halep, the match altogether was very close. Both players broke each others’ services four times apiece and had nearly identical numbers in regards to winners and unforced errors.
At points, Halep said she considered Elena Rybakina to be unplayable and her serves hard to read.
“I was checking the board to see how fast she served. Sometimes I couldn’t really touch the ball, it was really tough to return.
“I fought hard, I really wanted (to win) this tournament because I love playing here and I gave everything I had. Now I’m actually pretty dead!”
“I really want to congratulate Elena, she’s so young and has many years to play at the highest level,” said Halep in her post-match interview.
Later Halep tweeted just how much winning this match and the history surrounding it meant to her.
With this win, Simona Halep has now extended her stay in the top 10 to 318 weeks, the 10th longest streak in WTA history.
